In the late 15th century, under the Ottoman Empire, craftsmen of İznik created their own rendition of ceramic tile by replacing the traditional clay used with quartz. The innovative technique produced a bright white base, which made the four traditional colors found in İznik pieces.
The ceramic tile industry has grown substantially in recent years and a big percentage of the growth is seen on exterior installations. This can be for multiple reasons, including a cleaner, more contemporary look, better mortars and grouts, and large-format and gauged porcelain tiles.
